I was recently contacted by Spotlight and asked to review the Wilton Gingerbread House Kit for them. Gingerbread houses look like so much fun, but seem like a lot of effort. And I’m always worried that I won’t make the gingerbread pieces thick or strong enough and it’ll collapse. This kit takes all the stress out of it and makes for a fun family activity!

Keep reading because I have 2 kits to giveaway!

housepieces

The kit comes with all the gingerbread pieces needed to make the house, a huge bag of icing (I think I used half of it), 3 lots of lollies for decorating and a piping bag and tip. It also has very thorough instructions on how to assemble the house and 3 decorating options or you can decorate it however you like. Roman and I went the DIY version.

I put the house together one afternoon and we decorated it the next day. The instructions suggest trimming the piece to square them up. Mine were pretty good so I left them alone. The instructions also say there is a piece of cardboard to use for the base, but I couldn’t figure out which piece they meant so I built mine directly on a plate.

The icing is a great consistency. Soft enough to pipe nicely and also hard enough to hold the lollies in place. I didn’t seal the icing bag or the piping bag between constructing and decorating and after taking the dried piece of icing out that had been in the air, the rest of the icing was fine.

Roman was so excited when it arrived and asked every 5 minutes when we could decorate it. I had control of the piping bag and he told me where to pipe the icing. He had the job of eating the lollies sticking the lollies on. Please note that the little tree and snowman in the pictures are not from the kit, they are my own Christmas themed nesting dolls.

The Gingerbread smells great and I can’t wait to eat it! Overall I was really impressed with the kit. It was easy to put together, pretty foolproof really. Roman had a great time decorating it and it looks really good. Decorating the gingerbread house was a fun activity for the afternoon. The kit retails for $19.99 and is available a Spotlight stores nationally.

I’m looking forward to making another one next year. In fact, I think this might become a bit of a family tradition.
